Discount Power is a retail electricity provider (REP) in Texas, established in 2008 and headquartered in Houston. As you might guess from its name, Discount Power focuses on providing affordable electricity rates in Texas. It offers fixed-rate, variable-rate and time-of-use plans. Discount Power plans are available with different contract lengths ranging from 12 to 36 months.

Discount Power serves all areas of the Texas deregulated electricity market, which covers 85% of the state’s population, including major cities like Houston and Dallas.

In 2018, Discount Power became part of NRG Energy, a major energy corporation that operates in 24 US states. NRG also owns other electricity providers in Texas, including Reliant and Green Mountain Energy.

Discount Power Plans and Rates in Texas

Texas electricity rates are constantly changing due to the state’s competitive energy market, which has dozens of providers. Additionally, energy delivery costs vary based on your location and the specific TDU managing the power grid. As a result, energy rates in Texas can vary significantly by ZIP code, even when comparing plans from the same electricity providers.

Discount Power usually offers lower rates than most competitors. However, its electricity prices can still vary by location — or depending on the season. You can normally find the lowest rates in spring and fall since electricity demand is lower thanks to the mild weather. On the other hand, electricity rates tend to peak in summer and winter due to the high power demand from air conditioners and space heaters.

Using an online marketplace like Home Energy Club, you can easily compare electricity plans from Discount Power and other providers based on the specific rates offered in your ZIP code.

Discount Power Plan Types

As of February 2025, Discount Power offers three types of electricity plans, including the following:

  • Fixed-rate plans: The provider’s Wise Buy plans offer predictable energy bills with fixed-rate price protection for 12, 24 or 36 months.
  • Variable rate plans: The Wise Buy Monthly plan has no contract term or cancellation fees, allowing you to switch at any time. However, a rate that changes monthly will likely cause bill surprises.
  • Time-of-use plans: The Discount Nights plan offers a fixed rate with a discount of 2 cents per kWh from 8:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. Time-of-use plans may help you save, but only if you can adjust when you use the largest portion of your energy.

Discount Power formerly offered a bill credit plan, but that plan doesn’t appear to be available at this time. Although Discount Power doesn’t offer 100% renewable energy, many of its sister companies, including Reliant Energy and Green Mountain Energy, do offer 100% renewable plans.

Our Take on Discount Power

Discount Power scores 4.7 out of 5 stars in our  Home Energy Club review. It scores well across most categories, including customer satisfaction, online experience and customer retention. While DIscount Power doesn’t have the highest ratings for customer service, it still earned a respectable 4.0 out of 5 for this category.

Discount Power offers a minimal plan offering, which many customers may find helpful. Its plans are competitively priced and feature fairly straightforward rate structures, which means you should be able to expect predictable monthly energy costs. However, if you’re looking for a wider range of options, with features such as bill credits, solar buyback options or 100% green energy, you may want to consider other energy providers.

It’s also worth noting that while we like Discount Power’s straightforward and minimalist plan offerings, the light company doesn’t have the best ratings, with 2 out of 5 stars from the Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUCT) and 3.8 out of 5 stars on Google Reviews. Still, the provider’s plan offerings may suit your energy needs.

Discount Power Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Affordable, straightforward fixed-rate plans
  • Competitive time-of-use offerings
  • Backed by NRG Energy, a national energy leader

Cons

  • Limited plan offerings and features
  • No 100% renewable energy
  • Negative reviews highlighting billing issues and rate increases

Discount Power Customer Reviews and Ratings

As of February 2025, Discount Power has a score of 3.8 out of 5 stars on Google Reviews, based on over 1,800 customer reviews. In contrast, the company has a much lower score of 1 out of 5 stars at the Better Business Bureau (BBB), but this figure comes from only 40 reviews. This is a common trend among Texas electricity providers: Customers use the BBB mostly for complaints and negative reviews while using Google Reviews for general feedback—both positive and negative.

Contact Discount Power

You can contact Discount Power by phone, email or live chat with a customer service agent:

Outage reporting: Discount Power operates exclusively as an electricity provider with no direct control over the poles and wires in your area. To report a power outage or other issues related to the electricity grid, you must contact the local transmission and distribution utility (TDU). You can find the name of the local TDU on your monthly power bills.

Where Is Discount Power Available?

Discount Power offers energy plans in all six TDU territories and covers all areas of the Texas deregulated electricity market.

Who Should Pick Discount Power?

Discount Power focuses on offering low electricity rates, but the company has a limited service offering. Here are the types of customers most likely to benefit from Discount Power plans:

Bargain Hunters

Its Wise Buy plans offer competitive rates that may help you save if you’re after a bargain.

Night Owls

The Discount Nights plan may help you save if you consume most of your electricity at night. Meanwhile, its peak demand rate is still relatively fair, which is uncommon for this plan type.

Customers Who Just Moved to Texas

If you’re new to the Texas deregulated energy market, Discount Power’s minimalist plan offerings may help you narrow down your choices and make it easier to choose a plan.

Remote Workers

Working from home has benefits, such as avoiding the daily commute, but it also tends to increase energy usage. Discount Power plans, with their low electricity rates, can help offset the additional energy costs of 100% remote work.

Moving or Transferring Service with Discount Power

If you’re moving to another address, you can easily transfer your Discount Power service through your online account dashboard. Just click on the “Move My Service” option and complete the steps below:

  • Enter your new address.
  • Select your new service start date up to 60 days in advance.
  • Select the service end date for your current address.

Same-day service transfers are also available, but we recommend scheduling your transfer in advance to avoid delays and interruptions. Also, same-day service transfers may come with additional costs from the local utility company.

Is Discount Power Right For You?

We recommend Discount Power if you’re looking for low electricity rates with no hidden fees and aren’t interested in other plan features and customer perks. Discount Power offers very competitive energy rates, but it has a narrow selection of energy plans. If you want a basic plan with low rates, Discount Power may suit your needs.

Alternatives To Discount Power

Discount Power stands out for its affordable fixed-rate plans. However, TriEagle Energy, Rhythm Energy, and Frontier Utilities also offer fixed-rate plans with comparable prices. During spring and fall, all four companies offer rates that are competitive with Discount Power’s while also offering other perks, such as green energy or other plan features.
